About the Project
Kerf and Sole is a boutique custom furniture design group based out of Lafayette, Louisiana. One of the unique aspects of their approach is the choice of materials and the way they are crafted. Using aged wood and metal reclaimed from abandoned structures in the Louisiana countryside, they build contemporary and functional pieces that are completely custom.
The contrast between the vintage materials and contemporary execution was a foundational concept for how the identity should function across the Kerf and Sole system. For the logo mark, a custom geometric sans-serif was created inspired by the typefaces Agriculture and Klavika for the functional geometric lines that are reminiscent of the clean lines in modern furniture design. The type was designed so that it could function as a stencil for use as a signature mark on completed pieces, which we felt was a nice nod to the hands-on vintage roots the materials themselves have.
